Cozumel and the Maya City of Tulum.

Cozumel island from the ship.

We took a half hour ferry ride to the mainland and an hour bus ride to the ruins of Tulum.

This sign shows the layout of the cliff side walled area.

You enter through this fantastic example of the Maya arch. The wall is almost twenty feet thick. But the wall around the site ends before the cliff so it was not really for protection as much as a way to mark the palace and temple area.

These are altars on the cliff side.

These are hand carved steps up to the back of the main temple,

This is the back of the main temple looking up.

This is close on an altar room on top of the cliff. Notice one solid stone piece across the top of the window?

Is that a pirate ship?

Costumed performers at dock-side.

The main temple. This is a beautiful site on a cliff with a pretty little beach about 75 feet below. All the stone comes from the giant limestone rock that is the cliff.

The site is huge and you can easily imangine what it must have looked like only about 500 years ago.

They say this was the palace.

This, it is said was the priests' house.

This temple has a stili (tablet) in front.

This is close on the relief from the above temple.

Take a look at this temple's corner.

Below is a closer look.
