Poli Sci 2 - Potential Essay Questions for the Mid-term and Final Exams.

Prof. Joe Meyer, LACC

For the Midterm, I will choose two essay questions.

For the Final, I will choose four and the Model Question.

They are in the order they are covered in the class.

1. Do market economies lead to democracy? Why? What is the best example of this? Is China likely to follow this pattern? Is india? It is said that "China is the factory of the world, but India is the back office," do you agree? Are there lessons to be learned about democracy from China and India?

2. What is “civil society”? How does a country acquire one? Can democracy and a market economy flourish without one? Why have Poland , the Czech Republic , and Hungary succeeded at democracy while Russia has not? How does lack of civil society in China parallel the situation in Russia ? What might this lack mean in a transition to democracy?

3. Explain the differences of the meaning of “equality” in the United States and Russia . "Never having known freedom and democracy, Russians are now incapable of it." Agree or disagree. Make a strong argument.

4. How has China done better than the Soviet Union and Russia with the succession of top leaders? Does the admission of business people into the CCP mean that it will change, becoming more open and less communist? Or will the party simply co-opt the business people? Most of China 's top leaders are engineers by training. What does this mean for China 's political evolution? Are such leaders likely to be pragmatic or rigid?

5. Is China unstable? What indicators would you use? Do market economies lead to democracy? Why? What is the best example of this? Is China likely to follow this pattern? What factors are likely to produce political upheavals in China in the future? Can China 's economy stay part market and part state? Or is such a combination inherently unstable? Which way does China seem to be going? Make bold predictions and back them up with evidence.

6. Why has the Japanese prime minister not been the analog of the European or Canadian prime minister? What does the recent past of the Japanese political party system have to teach us about democracy? What can India and China learn from Japan? Is the LDP out of power for the long term? Make bold predictions and back them up with evidence.

7. Use Mexico and Nigeria as examples to answer the following: What are “cross-cutting cleavages” and how do they hold countries together? Does “clientelism” work better? What does this say about democracy?

8. Thinking of the differences between EAPs and PAPs in the so-called “third world,” which do you think should be the focus of most international aid? Cite examples and information from your text and “Your Country” and make a strong argument that demonstrates your understanding of the issues involved in this basic development debate.

9. Define globalization. Do not just provide others' definitions, but develop a comprehensive and cogent discussion of the major issues of globalization; who wins, who loses? Who pays? Is it “unstoppable.” What are the effects of globalization on so-called “third world development”? Cite examples and information from your text and “Your Country Report.”

10. Thinking of democracy and democratization, what are the roles of, and the importance of, such elements of society as: a “free press” an ”open political party system,” an “independent judiciary,” and “freedom of speech”? How are these elements “grown” or “strengthened”? Do they help democracy develop or exist in the countries we have covered?

11. Looking at the political development of a country and its economic development, which is more important? Which should be the focus of “third world” governments? Does one “cause,” “inhibit,” or “push” the other. Cite examples and information from your text and “Your Country.”

For the Final: Every one will answer four essays from the above and this:

MODEL QUESTION: Define democracy. Do not just provide others' definitions, but develop your own definition and then apply your definition to the countries covered in your text. Cite information and examples from your text. Is “1st world democracy” possible in the so-called “third world?” Using examples from the countries covered in the course and “Your Country” critically analyze the “Civic Culture” model. Highlight the model's weaknesses and strengths in helping you to define democracy and apply that definition to several countries. Discuss the entire model and be specific in citing examples. Make a strong argument in defense of your definition of democracy.
