Click the links below and view the video to the right to see what you have gotten yourself into. Click Here for the Assignment Page Click here for the WEEK 1 CHECKLIST (The eTudes portal will be open and ready by the first week of class) How to get on eTudes: Go to the LACC web page, on the left, click on "classes/areas of study" - From there - look to the right - in the light blue area - see where it says "eTudes portal"? WELL - first click on "eTudes help" and take the tutorial and learn how to use eTudes. If you can't get on eTudes, maybe you shouldn't take an online class??? You must attend the Final Exam/Poster Presentation Day - June 5, 2010. If you cannot do that - DROP THE CLASS NOW! (No Exceptions)! This class is just as much work as my "regular, on campus" classes - it may even be more work! Because you do it mostly alone!!!! GET YOUR BOOK NOW and start reading: If you purchase the custom edition of the text in the bookstore, it comes with the California State Government text in the back (for free?) and the code to access mypoliscilab.com course compass You will also need a course code (the same for both online classes: code will be available soon HERE). If you purchase the book used, you must still purchase the code from the publisher (see the text for details) and use the same course code. In order to be in the class you must (1) register at LACC, AND (2) complete the week 1 checklist and email me the student statement by the end of the first week or you may be excluded from the class. You must attend and take the final exam on the Final Exam Day. That day you will also present your Course Project Poster. You cannot earn better than a D in the class if you do not take the final, do the Course Project and do and present the Course Project Poster. INSTRUCTOR AVAILABILITY: Come visit my only on campus Poli Sci 1 class on Mondays and Weds., 9am - 10:25 in FH 222. Come visit my NEW OFFICE in FH 219I - x 2562 OFFICE HOURS: Mon. & Wed., 10:30-12:30. & Thursday: 4 - 6:30 pm. ...or by appointment. Online classes are not for everyone - Not everyone succeeds in online classes. Ask your self - do you have SELF Discipline? Can you motivate YOURSELF to finish tasks? Do you work well alone at the computer ? Can you read and write at the college level? If so - than I bet you will love this course and do well in it (if you read the book and web pages and do the assignments, of course). If not, maybe you should take another class. Take the student self assessment - click here - print it out and take it seriously. Do not share your answers with me - put them to work in your life!!!!! Do this each semester and see how you have grown! The "class discussions" (on eTudes) are bulletin boards where you post your thoughts and can comment on others on five specific topics (see calendar - to right). Please - DO NOT START A NEW TOPIC - just respond to my posts! The "student lounge"(on eTudes) is where students can stay in touch with each other, work together, plan stuff, etc. You DO NOT have to sign in each week, but feel free to email me about anything or use eTudes (or email) to talk to your classmates. For the class discussions, the basic rule is - don't post anything - or email anything - that you would not want your Grandma to hear you say (assuming you have a "normal" Grandma). No anonymous posting or childish b.s. like that PLEASE! You should respond to others' postings and put forth your own ideas - both are all part of contributing to a discussion, and that's how you earn participation points in the class. All work for the course is due no later than midnight Sunday June 6, 2010. Always include your section number in all emails, so I can keep my records correct - thanks. Please Check out the Assignment Page (above) and its links and see what you have gotten yourself into. This class is NOT easier than a "regular class". It ends up being More Work and you are ALONE doing it. Not everyone succeeds in online classes. Do you have self discipline? And self motivation? Here's a few things to remember: 1. The week runs from Monday through Sunday and ends at midnight Sunday. So all work received after that is LATE and points will be reduced. 2. This is not an "instant class." It takes me a few days or a week to get through to all the emails. 3. You are expected to do the reading (from the text) and then click on the appropriate week's lecture page from eTudes. You can read ahead a little - but don't fall behind! 4. This is the same class as any on campus class - it is not "easier" or "less work." Most students tell me it ends up being more work and even harder than an on campus class because you have to have self motivation and self discipline and you work mostly alone. NOTE WELL: You can not get better than a grade of D in the course if you do not take the final or do not complete the Course Project, or both, by the date of the Final Exam. If you do not attend the only MANDATORY class meeting, the final, you will recieve an F in the course. Late work will be substantially graded down. You loose points each week its late, so turn it in on time.
